Important USPS Change: Postmark Dates Now Reflect Processing, Not Drop-Off
Effective December 24, 2025, the United States Postal Service (USPS) changed how mail is postmarked. Postmarks now show the date your mail is processed at a postal facility—not the date you place it in a mailbox.
This means delays between when you drop off mail and when it is officially postmarked may occur more often.
Why This Matters
If you’re mailing something time-sensitive—like a tax filing or payment—on the due date, you could miss the deadline if your mail isn’t processed right away.
How to Protect Yourself
To ensure proof of timely mailing, take your item inside the post office and use one of these options:
-Request a hand-stamped (manual) postmark
-Obtain a Certificate of Mailing
-Send by certified or registered mail with a receipt
