Dispatcher, Daughter and Deputy help save a father’s life

On September 6, 2018 Dispatcher Sara Mattingly, Deputy Sheriff Kalyn Hall and a patient’s daughter helped save a man’s life. D/S Hall was dispatched to a call of a man who was unresponsive. Dispatcher Sara Mattingly provided CPR instructions to the caller, which was his daughter, and she provided CPR until D/S Hall arrived.

D/S Hall took over CPR, and the patient’s daughter continued to assist while D/S Hall was preparing to deploy the AED.

Once the Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 automated external defibrillator (AED) was ready for deployment, it prompted for the delivery of a shock to the patient. While the AED continued assessing the patient, D/S Hall continued CPR until York County Fire and Life Safety Medics arrived and took over the patient care. While on scene, with the assistance of D/S Hall and YCFLS Medics, the patient's heart started to beat on its own. If it had not been for the quick actions of the patient’s daughter, D/S Hall, the early CPR and defibrillation, the patient may not have survived.

“Our deputies are able to respond very quickly to a cardiac event simply because we are on the road patrolling,” Sheriff Diggs said. “I am thrilled that we can provide quick medical assistance to patients until the medics arrive. Our training with CPR and AEDs saves lives.”
