The treatment of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers that resulted in his death is unacceptable and constitutes criminal conduct.
In addition to the prosecution of those responsible for this act, there should also be a reassurance and commitment by local law enforcement leaders across the nation that this type of behavior is not tolerated in our communities and will never happen again.
You have that commitment from me and I can assure you that this type of behavior has not and will not be tolerated by me as the Sheriff of York County and Poquoson.
A Sheriff and his Deputies are a reflection of the community and we strive very hard to make sure that public trust and public safety are at the core of our beliefs. Incidents like this remind us that we must continually be accountable to the people that we serve. We must fairly exercise our obligations and responsibilities while protecting life and property. One of our goals is to always treat everyone that we encounter with courtesy and respect.
Please remember that this tragedy took place far away from our community. I ask that you reflect and ask yourself what is the reputation of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. Have we demonstrated not only through our words, but through our actions, that we are your public servants who have the strongest commitment to protecting and serving everyone in our community?
I know the men and women who serve in this Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies across Virginia are committed to protecting our communities and maintaining the trust that each of you deserve.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Floyd. I pray for the Floyd family, for the people of Minneapolis, for our own community, and for our entire nation that we may have peace return, and that we all learn from this terrible situation and the events that followed. Give us all the wisdom and resolve to ensure that a situation like this never occurs again.
