Household waste, or residential waste, is disposable material generated by households. This should usually be comprised of non-hazardous waste, such as food scraps, packaging, paper goods, etc. In York County, our contractor Republic Services collects this waste on a weekly basis through their automated program. Program guidelines request that containers are placed by the roadside by 7:00 a.m. on the day of pickup, placed on a level surface, and making sure the container is not overfilled and the lid is securely closed. Recently, our contractor has seen an increase in disposal of items that should not be included with household waste. These items include bulk items, construction debris, and other items that should be disposed of elsewhere. Here are some of the other disposal options we offer:
- Household Chemical Collections: VPPSA offers five collections events per year in York County for the purpose of collecting hazardous waste such as fertilizer, chemicals, gasoline and many other harmful items. These collections also offer an option to recycle computer and various other electronic items. Details can be found here
- Bulk Item Collection: Subscribers to York County's garbage collection service are eligible for up to four bulk collections per year at no additional charge, and there are a number of items that are included as acceptable bulk items. Please see the full list of items here
- Yard Debris: Residents may request a yard debris collection from the County, or take their yard debris to the VPPSA Compost Facility at 145 Goodwin Neck Road. Details can be found here
- Construction Debris: Items such as framing, concrete, boards, and bricks should never be thrown away in residential garbage containers. Residents who subscribe to the County’s curbside garbage collection program can bring construction debris to the Waste Management Facility at no charge. Please do not place construction material in your trash receptacle. Contractors, residents from other localities and County residents who do not subscribe to the County’s curbside collection program who bring waste to York County’s Transfer Station will be charged a tipping fee of $56.23 per ton (prorated by weight with a minimum fee of $7 for the first 260 pounds for York County and Poquoson residents).
- Recycling: York County offers both residential curbside recycling collection and a drop-off center at 145 Goodwin Neck Road. Please see the list of all recyclable items here
