Educational Displays

The Mosquito Control division has displays set up in several areas of York County to educate our citizens on the importance of mosquito control. Display boards can be found seasonally at York and Tabb libraries.

Elementary School Program

An elementary school program for 3rd grade students was established to promote awareness and prevention of mosquitoes and the threat of their various borne diseases.

Each year, Mosquito Control staff delivers award winning program in ten elementary schools to over 1000 students.  We teach students about mosquito biology, life cycles, food chains, and the importance of mosquito control. Per teachers' request, a segment on metamorphosis is also included.

The program is compatible with the Virginia public schools' third grade Standards of Learning.

Outreach Initiatives

York County Mosquito Control is constantly searching for ways to expand our outreach program. In addition to our award winning Elementary School Program and Educational Displays set up throughout the County, the Mosquito Control program offers other outreach initiatives.

Home Inspections

York County residents can Mosquito Control to request a home inspection to identify areas of standing water or prime habitats where mosquitoes may be breeding.  Mosquito Control staff will discuss findings with the residents and make recommendations to eliminate the breeding locations.  Residents may call Mosquito Control at 757-890-3790 to request a home inspection.

Mosquito Control Awareness Week

The last full week in June every year is National Mosquito Awareness week. During this week, among many other outreach activities, mosquito control staff distributes educational materials to citizens and staff of other departments. We believe it is important that all York County staff understand the importance of mosquito control.

Annual Tire Drives

Tires are a favorite breeding ground of the Asian tiger mosquito. In 2014, the first annual Tire Amnesty Drive was conducted. The goal of this program is to provide our citizens with an opportunity to dispose of this prime mosquito breeding habitat free of charge. When we promote the tire drive, we also educate our citizens on why it is important to properly dispose of tires. The tire drive is held annually in June.

Yorktown Market Days

Mosquito Control staff participates in one Yorktown Market Days event per month from May - August. Staff distribute educational materials, show mosquito plant samples, and provide advice to our citizens and guests.
