Digital Photography Contest

The York County Public Library is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 York County Public Library Digital Photography Contest. The contest was open to amateur photographers in two categories: Teens, ages 13 to 17, and adults, ages 18 and up. Three winners in each category were chosen by volunteer judge Jim Pile, a professional photographer based in Yorktown, Virginia. The entries were judged on technical skill as well as the image’s connection to this year’s theme: Celebrate York County. The winning entries will be shared on the library’s Facebook page.

Adult Category

First Place: “Sunset at Yorktown Beach” by Alexis Mulligan
Second Place:  “Great Blue Heron at Yorktown Beach” by Arlene Hood
Third Place:  “Fifes and Drums” by Brenna Behel

Teen Category

First Place: “Sunrise at Yorktown Beach” by Indira Durham
Second Place:  “Yorktown Onions” by Sophia Kelly
Third Place:  “Mourning Dove on Branch” by Becky Williams

Winners will receive prizes funded by a generous grant from The Arts Commission of York County. The grant also allowed the library to purchase updated materials on various aspects of photography.

The Library would like to give a special thanks to our judge, Jim Pile. Mr. Pile has been a professional magazine photographer for 35 years. He was Director of Photography for VistaGraphics, which publishes Coastal Virginia Magazine, along with 40 other publications. Although recently retired, Mr. Pile still shoots freelance for VistaGraphics, as well as other clients. Examples of his work can be seen on his website.
