York County Gov Series Reaches Capacity Within Hours—Waitlist Now Open
It didn’t take long—just a few hours after applications opened, all available spots for the new York County Gov Series were filled! This exciting, free 10-week program gives residents an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at how York County operates. Each weekly session features a different department, with tours, hands-on demonstrations, and conversations with County staff and leadership—from Public Safety and Emergency Communications to Tourism, Budgeting, and more. 
If you missed your chance to sign up, don’t worry—a waitlist is now open. Should space become available, we’ll contact those on the list in the order applications were received.
The good news? This is just the beginning! The Gov Series is planned as an annual program—and may even be offered twice a year in the future. So, if you didn’t get in this time, there will be more opportunities to participate. Learn more and join the waitlist today. 

NACo Awards

York County Earns NACo Awards for Innovation and Service Excellence

Tidewater Drive

Tidewater Drive Rocks the Riverwalk July 24! 
With showmanship and personality as big as their sound, The Tidewater Drive Band is a performance powerhouse, and they’ll be rocking the Riverwalk Landing Stage at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 24.  Their powerful vocals, bold brass, and high-energy hits are sure to create unforgettable moments on and off the dance floor, so be sure to join us for another free Sounds of Summer Concert! 

Croaker Classic

Reel in the Fun: Join Yorktown’s First Croaker Classic Fishing Tournament
Registration is now open for the inaugural Colonial Croaker Classic Fishing Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, August 2–3, 2025. York County, in partnership with the Historic Triangle Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, is hosting the event at Riverwalk Landing in Historic Yorktown. This family-friendly tournament is open to anglers of all ages and experience levels, and participants may launch from any boat ramp or fish from any shoreline or pier within the designated area. 

A Weekend of Tradition, Tribute, and Market Fun in Yorktown!
It's going to be a busy weekend in Historic Yorktown! Kick it off at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 18, as we honor the bold citizens of York County who gathered at the Swan Tavern on July 18, 1775, to take a stand against British taxes and tyranny. Attendees will meet at Mobjack Coffee Roasters and march in a special procession to the Thomas Nelson House for a moving commemorative program. The fun continues on Saturday, July 19, at Riverwalk Landing with another Yorktown Market Days featuring a live performance by acoustical guitarist Ami Baker. The market will feature fresh produce, seafood, glassware, jewelry, leather goods, and more! 

National Night Out

Neighborhoods Encouraged to Participate in Annual National Night Out
National Night Out returns on August 6, and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office invites neighborhoods across the community to take part in this annual event that strengthens police and community partnerships. Residents are encouraged to organize neighborhood gatherings that foster connection, promote safety, and build stronger relationships with those who live nearby. The final deadline to register is July 22. Upon request, Sheriff’s Office representatives can visit your event to share crime prevention tips, hand out fun giveaways for kids, and spend time engaging with the community. Calling all District 2 Residents! 
Are you passionate about how your community grows and develops? Do you want to have a voice in shaping the future of your neighborhood? We’re currently accepting applications for a Planning Commission seat representing District 2! As a Planning Commissioner, you’ll help guide land use decisions, review development proposals, and ensure responsible planning that aligns with our community’s vision. Not sure if you live in District 2? Check the subdivisions listed here,  or look up your address on the Property Information System and check your supervising district. Apply today and make a meaningful impact right where you live!  

Grow a Greener Lawn with Help from Healthy Virginia Lawns
The Healthy Virginia Lawns program offers York County and Poquoson residents expert guidance on maintaining their lawns in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way. Scheduling now through August 24, and for just $20, York/Poquoson Master Gardeners will visit your property to conduct a site analysis, measure your turfgrass area, collect a soil sample, and provide customized, science-based recommendations for lawn fertilization and care. These recommendations are tailored to your yard’s specific needs, helping you achieve a healthier lawn using best management practices informed by soil test results.

Additional Notes for the Week…Applications are being accepted for the Head Start 2025-2026 school year. Starting the application process only requires a completed application, proof of York County residency, and family income documentation. See all the details here.
