[ARCHIVED] Library & York-Poquoson VCE Partner for Gardening Series

The York County Public Library and York-Poquoson Virginia Cooperative Extension Office are partnering to bring Master Gardeners to the Tabb and Yorktown Libraries in 2019. The Mastering Your Garden series will feature a variety of weekend gardening seminars for every interest and experience level.

  • Winter Pruning Tips on Saturday, January 12, 2 to 4 p.m. @ Tabb Library, Register Now
    Become pruning confident in our free seminar with Master Gardener Mary Boxer. Learn the safe and proper use of pruning tools to improve the health, longevity and appearance of plants, ornamental shrubs and trees.
  • Starting from Seed on Sunday, Feb. 10, 1:30-3 p.m. @ Tabb Library, Register beginning Jan. 7
    Have you ever tried to grow your own plants from seed, but had limited success? Join Master Gardener Nate Brauner to learn some easy techniques and secrets to growing your own flowers, vegetables and favorite plants from seed at home. Increase the variety in your garden, and find solutions that work in your area.
  • Growing Vegetables on Saturday, Feb. 16, 1:30-3 p.m. @ Yorktown Library, Register beginning Jan. 14
    Join Master Gardener Patty Ellison to learn how to make your dream vegetable garden a reality. Topics covered include water, zones, nutrition, pest prevention, and more.
  • Tools of the Trade on Saturday, March 23, 1:30-2:30 p.m. @ Yorktown Library, Register beginning Feb. 18
    Join Master Gardener Phil Leatherbury to learn how to sharpen and care for your garden tools. Get some insight into the tools available and how to make them work in your garden.
  • Gardening in Small Spaces on Saturday, April 13, 1-2:30 p.m. @ Tabb Library, Register beginning March 11
    Do you have limited room to plant a garden? Have your past attempts at growing vegetables and flowers been less than you had hoped for? Join Master Gardener Nate Brauner to learn how intensive gardening techniques can transform your small garden into a success for all of your favorite plants.
  • Planting for Pollinators on Saturday, May 11, 1-2:30 p.m. @ Yorktown Library, Register beginning April 8
    What can you do to help the monarch butterflies, honey bees and other pollinators in our area? Join Master Gardener Nate Brauner to learn how simple choices can help transform your yard or garden bed into a habitat that is teeming with beneficial insects and brings beauty into your yard. 
  • Thrive With Houseplants on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2-3:30 p.m. @ Tabb Library, Register beginning Aug. 12
    Join Master Gardener Bethany Beck to learn how to choose and care for your houseplants. Explore creative ways to bring plants into your home and discover ideas for unique containers. Consider choosing alternative plants you might not have thought of as houseplants for your home.
  • Bulbs 101 on Saturday, Oct. 19, 1:30-3 p.m. @ Tabb Library, Register beginning Sept. 16
    Join Master Gardener Bethany Beck to learn the history of the tulip, as well as how and when to plant bulbs inside and out. The seminar will end with a demonstration of how to make a layered bulb container, which one attendee will get to take home.
  • Getting Started with Composting on Saturday, Nov. 9, 1:30-3 p.m. @ Tabb Library, Register beginning Oct. 7
    Join Master Gardener Carol Bartram to learn how to turn your household's organic "waste" into garden gold! The basics of composting will be covered, as well as tips to overcome common composting challenges.
  • Natural Holiday Decorating on Saturday, Dec. 7, 1-2:30 p.m. @ Tabb Library, Register beginning Nov. 4
    Join Master Gardener Nettie Lamb to learn how to use natural materials to decorate inside and outside your house for the holidays. Discover practical tips to make beautiful and affordable garlands that will last throughout the holiday season.
