Explore the Airship Roma Disaster

In 1921, the then-United States Army Air Service embarked on a grand experiment to add airships to the fleet. When the experiment failed in a fiery disaster that claimed the lives of 34 servicemen, the event was soon forgotten. Join author & historian Nancy E. Sheppard on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Yorktown Library to rediscover this lost local tragedy. Books will be available for sale after the program.

Nancy E. Sheppard is a local author and historian. She has written two books: The Airship ROMA Disaster in Hampton Roads (2016) and Hampton Roads Murder & Mayhem (2018). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from American Military University and is the local history staff writer for the Yorktown Crier-Poquoson Post newspaper. Aside from researching and writing history, Ms. Sheppard enjoys lecturing about history, photography, a historical preservation advocate, and a lighter-than-air & early aviation enthusiast. She also advocates for military families with special needs and the awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
