Calling all parents and young adults ages 14 - 20! Discover what it takes to become a law enforcement explorer with the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office. Explore careers in law enforcement, build leadership, discipline, and teamwork skills and take part in hands on training and community service alongside our deputies.  Meet our team, learn more about the program, and see how you can make a positive difference in your community while building skills for the future.  Parents and teens are welcome to attend to learn more!

Identity Theft & Scams Awareness Class

This class is designed to help community members recognize and avoid common scams. We will cover identity theft, telemarketing scams, healthcare scams, tech support scams, and much more, while showing you how to protect yourself from falling victim to these tricks.

The session is open to the public and provides an opportunity to ask questions, learn practical prevention strategies, and gain valuable tools to help keep your personal and financial information safe.

Sheriff’s Business Academy

York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Business Academy is a free, four-week program designed to help business owners, managers, and faith-based organizations better understand crime prevention and workplace safety resources available in York County and the City of Poquoson. Participants will learn about law enforcement operations, crime prevention strategies, and emergency planning while building connections with public safety professionals. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings, beginning February 3, 2026, and conclude with a graduation on March 3, 2026.

C.R.A.S.E - Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (No registration required)

Overview:
C.R.A.S.E. is a nationwide program designed to educate civilians on how to respond effectively during an active shooter or other violent incidents. Developed by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, C.R.A.S.E. empowers individuals with knowledge, awareness, and practical strategies to maximize personal safety in high-risk situations.

Key Objectives:

  • Increase Situational Awareness: Learn to recognize potential threats before they escalate.
  • Promote Preparedness: Understand the steps to take to protect yourself and others in critical moments.
  • Enhance Survival Skills: Training focuses on the proven “Run, Hide, Fight” methodology.
  • Reduce Panic and Confusion: Practical drills and guidance help participants respond calmly and decisively.

R.A.D. Classes

The Rape Aggression Defense System™  is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.
