April News - Dept of Public Works,
Spring has sprung, and York Department of Public Works and the York County Beautification Committee (YCBC) want to make sure York County is aware of all that we have planned for spring! Earth Day is on Monday April 22nd, and we have many ways you can celebrate and give back to the Earth!
This Saturday, April 6, the YCBC will partner with the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries’ Habitat Partners© Program to present “Hometown Habitat,” a 60-minute documentary focused on native plants, and how they are critical to the survival and vitality of local ecosystems. For more information or to register for the event, please visit www.yorkcounty.gov/nativeplants.
On Saturday, April 13, come visit our booth at Yorktown Market Days! As always, we will have information to share on many environmental items (including Earth Day on April 22), and will have tools for a Recycling Scavenger Hunt. See if you can find a water bottle, something cardboard, and other items that can be recycled! Don’t forget to bring your plastic bags and we’ll add them to our bags to recycle for the Trex Challenge, turning plastic bags into benches for our schools.
Did you know that you can now check out a Litter Cleanup Kit and host your own Cleanup Event? Team Up to Clean Up, and help your community stay beautiful by picking up litter. We’ll provide the kit for a one-week checkout, which includes gloves, bags for litter (and clear recycling bags upon request), safety vests, litter pickup tools, and more. We’ll even come pick up the trash when you’re done! Take cleanups one step further, and Adopt-A-Spot to take care of your favorite place in the County. The Great American Cleanup kicks off May 3-4, so it’s a perfect time to choose a location for your cleanup. For more information, visit our Community Cleanup Partnerships page.
Got Tires? They make a perfect mosquito breeding place, so bring your used tires to our Tire Recycling Event on April 20. Mosquito Control will be on site from 8:00am – 4:00pm for free drop off for tires (up to five tires, on or off rim). Don’t forget to ask about yard inspections, and find out how getting rid of standing water (in tires, bird baths, even tarps!) can help fight the bite.
On Saturday, April 27, we will partner with the Sheriff’s/D.A.R.E. office for The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The YCBC will provide a truck to shred paperwork on site from 10:00am – 1:00pm. Bring up to five boxes of papers to be shredded (we’ll also collect plastic bags, and collect non-perishable foods for the Peninsula Food Bank). For more details about these items, please visit our webpage.
We’re excited to celebrate Earth Day in other ways as well, including reading to Elementary School Students and breaking ground on our own Demonstration Garden (a “Butterfly” Garden, among other pollinators)! We hope to see you at one of our events this spring.
