York County Clarifies “No Wake Zone” Regulations
February 12, 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
York County, Va. —York County would like to address recent questions regarding “No Wake Zones” (NWZ) in our waterways.
At the February 17 Board of Supervisors meeting, officials will consolidate all existing markers into a single ordinance. This is intended to eliminate confusion since the current zones were approved over several decades.
We want to assure residents and boaters that there are no pending additional restrictions or increases in the number or size of existing “No Wake” zones in County waterways. We also want to ensure that the existing zones are properly marked for all boaters. Our priority is to keep the community informed and ensure safe, enjoyable use of our waterways.
Key Points:
No new “No Wake” zones are being implemented. All current zones remain as previously approved. No expansion of existing NWZ is requested.
The County will continue to maintain and service all official NWZ signs to ensure clarity and compliance for boaters.
County officials emphasize that if residents wish to propose changes—whether adding or removing a zone—those requests must be submitted to the Board of Supervisors. Any proposed changes will follow the standard process, including submitting a request, a public hearing, and approval by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.
We appreciate the community’s engagement and encourage everyone to review approved NWZ signage and regulations to ensure compliance and safety on the water. “Our goal is to make sure boaters have clear, consistent information so they can enjoy our waterways safely,” said Deputy County Administrator Brian Fuller.
