Honoring Courage and Sacrifice This Veterans Day The public is invited to the annual Veteran's Day Ceremony in York Hall at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11. Sponsored by the York County Historical Committee, the ceremony honors the members of our armed forces. This year’s theme, “Virginia’s Medal of Honor Recipients,” pays tribute to the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Virginians who have received the nation’s highest military honor. Throughout the ceremony, guests will learn about several of these remarkable heroes. The program will also feature the tolling of the bell, presentation of the colors, singing of the National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, and “Taps.”

Ahoy, Mateys! The Maritime Festival Returns to Yorktown Well, shiver me timbers! It’s time for Yorktown Market Days’ Maritime Festival at Riverwalk Landing. During this two-day farmers market on Saturday and Sunday, November 8 and 9, sample some of the best seafood in the area including clam chowder, Virginia blue crabs, and fresh fried fish. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, you can enjoy a pirate encampment, maritime history exhibits, face painting, blacksmith demonstrations, nautical-inspired keepsakes, and live music. It’s a weekend that is sure to make any landlubber want to set sail! The free, accessible Yorktown Trolley will be in operation beginning at 11 a.m. during this event.

Final VPPSA Recycling & Shredding Event of the Year – November 8 York County residents are encouraged to take part in the final VPPSA Household Chemical/Computer Recycling and Paper Shredding event of the year on Saturday, November 8, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the County Drive drop-off site (off Goodwin Neck Road). Accepted materials include common household chemicals such as paints, fuels, automotive products, and lawn or garden supplies, as well as select computer equipment like desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, and cell phones. Please note that televisions will not be accepted. Citizens may also bring up to five boxes of personal paperwork for on-site shredding—no need to remove staples or paperclips. Proof of residency may be required, and VPPSA staff will assist with unloading materials. For details on acceptable items, visit VPPSA.org or contact the Waste Management Center at (757) 890-3780.

Exploring Liberty in Colonial Virginia Lord Dunmore has silenced all dissent, seizing Hampton’s printing press to spread his proclamation offering freedom to enslaved people and servants who joined the British forces! Join us on Thursday, November 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Yorktown Library as we peer into the origins of the Virginia Bill of Rights and uncover the complex story of liberty during Virginia’s colonial past. This engaging program is part of the 250th Anniversary of Dunmore’s Virginia Campaign and the Virginia Revolutionary War Trail, sponsored by the York County 250 Committee and the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. York County's Division of Housing & Neighborhood Revitalization recently completed a home restoration project along Carys Chapel Road, funded through a federal grant. Support Your Neighbors through Help 2 Others Water Assistance Program Throughout the year, residents of our region, including York County, face unexpected challenges that can leave them struggling to pay their bills. The Help 2 Others (H2O) water assistance program assists these families. The program provides eligible residents in York County and throughout Hampton Roads with one-time financial assistance of up to $500 to cover local water and wastewater utility bills. This year, residents and businesses are invited to ‘adopt a drop’ to help neighbors in need. For more information on how you can give, please visit the H2O website. Additional Notes for the Week….
