Curbside Recycling

Curbside Recycling Returns to York County in January 2026
York County is pleased to announce that it has issued a Notice of Intent to Award for Curbside Trash and Recycling Services to BFI Waste Management Services LLC, doing business as Republic Services of Yorktown. Republic Services, a long-standing partner in the community, has provided curbside trash collection in York County for nearly 30 years. The York County Board of Supervisors is expected to approve the contract at its November 18 meeting, paving the way for the return of this valued service. Recycling containers will not be collected from November 1 through December 31, 2025, and residents should retain their bins during this time. Some households may receive new containers before January, and a bi-weekly collection schedule will be shared soon. For updates, visit yorkcounty.gov/recycle.

DEA Drug Take Back and Shredding Event This Saturday
On Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sheriff Ron Montgomery and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office will host a Drug Take Back event, offering residents a safe and anonymous way to dispose of expired or unneeded prescription pills, patches, and liquid medications. Vaping pens without internal batteries are also accepted; however, needles and sharps cannot be taken. The event takes place at the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, 159 Goodwin Neck Road, and is free of charge—no questions asked.
In addition, the York County Beautification Committee and the Department of Public Works will provide on-site paper shredding services, allowing citizens to shred up to five boxes of personal paperwork per person without needing to remove staples or paperclips. The Beautification Committee will also collect plastic bags for the Trex Bench Challenge, working toward a goal of 1,000 pounds of recyclable plastic to earn a free bench for a local school. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned or boxed food donations to support a local food pantry. Signs will be posted to direct traffic to the event entrance. For more information, call the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office at (757) 890-3630.

York County School Board Seeks Community Input in Superintendent Search
The York County School Board has officially begun the process of hiring a new superintendent and is asking for public input to help shape the qualifications and priorities for the position. To gather feedback, the board has launched an online survey (hardcopies are available at the School Board Administration office and at each school). Surveys must be completed by October 31, 2025. In addition to the survey, the School Board will hold a public hearing on October 27 at 7 p.m. in York Hall to receive comments directly from community members. “The selection of a new superintendent is one of the most important responsibilities of the School Board, and we are dedicated to ensuring the community’s voice is part of the process,” said School Board Chair Kimberly Goodwin. “We encourage parents, staff, and community members to share their input by completing the survey and attending the upcoming public hearing.” The board has partnered with the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) to assist in the search process.
