Tall Ship Visiting June 13-17 Offers Day Sails, Free Deck Tours

Save the date….Kalmar Nyckel, The Tall Ship of Delaware, is sailing into Historic Yorktown June 13-17. Free deck tours are available Tuesday, June 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. and Thursday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Experience a 2 ½ hour day sail where you can haul lines, set sails, and hear tales from the crew, or simply relax and enjoy. Purchase tickets online for day sails offered at various times from June 15-17.  Additional information is available on the Visit Yorktown website. 

Stop by Yorktown Market Days from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. tomorrow (5/20) to shop from over 35 market vendors and more than 10 artists. Purchase seasonal produce, snacks, spices, sweets, and other products that may be on your shopping list, or pick up a special treat for family, friends or even fido!

Outstanding Youth Award Winners Recognized at Board Meeting

Congratulations to India Givens, Elise Hoglund, Nathaniel Lambright, and Gavin Peters for being selected as the recipients of the 2023 Outstanding Youth Awards. The students were recognized at Tuesday’s (5/16) meeting of the Board of Supervisors and presented with a Board Resolution. Each student receives a $1,000 educational scholarship for their post high school education at a college, university or trade school. Visit the County’s website to “meet” these award winners and read highlights from their nominations. Visitors to the website may also watch the presentation from the Board meeting.

Ninety percent of all natural disasters in the United States involve some type of flooding, and where it can rain, it can flood. These and other facts are available on the GetFloodFluent.org website, where residents may also utilize the Flood Risk Caculator to determine what is needed to insure home and property.  Remember, most flood insurance policies require 30 days to take effect.  

Upcoming Library Programs for Adults

Celebrate National Bike Month by learning how to maintain your own ride during the Basic Bike Repair & Maintenance program on Sunday (5/21), 1:30 p.m., at Tabb Library. Adults are welcome to bring teens and youth interested in learning bike basics. Please do not bring personal bicycles!  Next Wednesday (5/24), establish or deepen your mindfulness and meditation practice during the Meditation Series from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Tabb Library with a certified instructor. Finally, visit Yorktown Library Saturday, May 27, from 2 to 3 p.m. to Meet Your Maker(space) and learn more about the library’s Glowforge. 

Additional Notes for the Week…Movies in the Park is at the McReynolds Athletic Complex (MAC) tomorrow (5/20) at sunset and features Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating to this free event. Concessions available for purchase. In case of bad weather, call the rainout line at 757-890-3501, ext. 10.   New Quarter Park bird walks are held the 4^th Saturday of every month and hosted by the Williamsburg Bird Club. Next bird walk is May 27. Check in at the park office to join the group.
