Arrival of Spring Brings a New Season of Events and Attractions

It’s officially spring, which means your favorites are returning to Historic Yorktown. The Trolley is up and running daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., transporting you to the waterfront, Riverwalk Landing, and local museums.  The Gallery at York Hall is adjacent to a trolley stop and features the work of local artists and special exhibits. The Gallery reopens April 1 with hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.  Yorktown Market Days kicks off its 17th season on April 8 at 8 a.m. Still ahead, Pirates Invade Yorktown the weekend of April 29-30, Blues, Brews, and BBQ with the best local beers and food on May 6, and Art at the River along the waterfront (May 7). Weekend On Your Wheels:  Registration Still Open

Who’s ready for a bicycle race?  Join us for a fast-paced, exciting series of mountain bike races at New Quarter Park (1000 Lakeshead Drive). Seven different types of races that match anyone’s skill level are offered and open to youth between the ages of 3 and 17. Registration for each of the events is required. All registered participants start checking in at noon, with the first race beginning at 1 p.m. Kids may compete in all three races or at least one on March 26, April 2, and April 16. 

Summer Fun

Summer Camp Registration Opens April 3

Parks and Recreation offers several full and half-day camps for kids. Summer Fun is Monday – Thursdays (June 26-July 27) and includes games, activities, story times, and more! Field Trip Fever I is Fridays (June 30-July 28) and Field Trip Fever II is one-week-long (July 31-August 4).  Sports Camps include archery, baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Arts Camps include drawing, painting, fabric and fibre. These are popular camps that often fill quickly. Registration begins Monday, April 3, so don’t delay!  Visit the website for the list of summer activities and programs.

Registration for Junior 4-H Summer Camp (July 31-August 4) begins Saturday, April 15, at 9 a.m. This week-long overnight program is available to York County and Poquoson residents ages 9-13 and is held at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center.  Classes, swimming, campfires, and more are scheduled for this fun and exciting camp. FY2024 Proposed Budget Available Online

At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors’ meeting, County Administrator Neil Morgan presented the proposed budget for the next fiscal year.  His presentation includes detailed information about projected revenues and expenditures, and also a helpful summary of the recommended reduction in real estate and personal property taxes.  Citizens may view the full budget document online and can send comments to bos@yorkcounty.gov or leave a message at 757-890-3220. The Board will discuss the proposed budget at the April 4 work session and welcome citizen comment at the April 18 public hearing (both meetings begin at 6 p.m. in York Hall).  You can watch the County Administrator’s presentation on the County’s website.

Additional Notes for the Week…The YMCA Victory at Yorktown races are next Saturday (4/1) and several street closures will be in effect that morning.  Read all about it online.   The deadline to apply to serve on the York County Youth Commission for the 2023-2024 school year has been extended to April 10.  Application forms and program details are available on the Youth Commission’s website.
