Grafton Annex Closing Tuesday (1/31)

In anticipation of the reopening of the Yorktown Library, the Grafton Annex is closing early next week. This will allow staff to begin moving books and equipment back to the Yorktown branch. Curbside pickup of library materials will be offered at the newly renovated facility with details to be announced soon. A reopening celebration with special activities is in the works and information will be shared with the public once a date has been set. Keep checking the Library’s Facebook page and website for updates.

Nominate a Student for an Outstanding Youth Award Scholarship

Each year, the Board of Supervisors and County’s Youth Commission recognize local young people through the Outstanding Youth Award Educational Scholarship program. Students who lives in York County and are enrolled in grades 9-12 at a public, private, or homeschool are eligible and may be nominated by anyone (adult, teenager, group or organization). There are four award categories: Courage, Compassion, Community Service, and Overall Achievement. Individuals chosen will each receive $1,000 for post-secondary college or trade school and are recognized at a Board of Supervisors’ meeting. Complete details are available on the nomination form. Submission deadline is February 17.

Staycations Let You Relax Close to Home

If you’re longing for a romantic winter weekend getaway or just want to relax, here are a few cozy and comfortable suggestions. Stay at a home away from home by booking one or two nights all within one mile of the York River. Treat yourself to some of the areas historical, artistic, and shopping attractions. Be sure to check Visit Yorktown for a list of events happening and accommodations to schedule your staycation.

Dominion Energy Launching New Alert System for Surry Power Station

Starting Wednesday (2/1), Dominion Energy, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, is replacing sirens with the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) that notifies both television and radio broadcasters of incidents at the power station and sends the messaging directly to cell phones. This allows authorities to provide information on a real-time basis. Additional details about the transition to this alert system is available on the Dominion Energy website.

Master Gardener Program Offering On-site Lawn Care Advice

Residents of York County and Poquoson may register and receive input on how to take care of their lawns in an economic and environmentally sound manner. As part of the Healthy Virginia Lawns program, York/Poquoson Master Gardeners will visit your home, measure the yard, take a soil sample, and provide a personalized Nutrient Management Plan…all for only $20! Additional Notes for the Week…The Virginia Living Museum is bringing some animal friends to Charles Brown Park next Saturday (1/4). Register by Thursday (1/2) for this low-cost event. The next meeting of the Board of Supervisors is February 7. Be sure to look online for agendas, meeting presentations, weekly correspondence, and more. The February 8 Planning Commission meeting has been cancelled. Next meeting is scheduled for March 8.
