Sign Up for AARP Tax Aide Offered at Senior Center

Getting help preparing your taxes is available again this year.  Volunteers are providing this service for free to those who make an appointment at the Senior Center.  Registering is easy:  Visit the Senior Center on one of the following dates – January 26, 27, 28, or 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., pick up a tax packet, and schedule your appointment!  Free Tax services begin February 1.  Participants should bring last year’s tax returns and all current tax information to their scheduled appointment.  For more information, please call the Senior Center at 757-890-3444. The Senior Center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center on Route 17. Preference is given to those age 60 and up.

Keep Your Family Safe with Free Gun Locks from the Sheriff’s Office

Citizens of York County and Poquoson are eligible to receive a free gun lock and firearm safety educational material from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. Individuals interested in the Project ChildSafe program may stop by the office (301 Goodwin Neck Road) during business hours of 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Those who are unable to stop by the office can fill out a Home Delivery form.

Interested in Serving the Community? Become a Volunteer!

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available in York County, including coaches for sports programs, park ambassadors, summer camps, Senior Center activities, and special events. Signing up is easy—visit the website and complete the online Volunteer Services Application. After a review, volunteers will attend an orientation program (varies by program and event). Then the fun begins and you’ll receive your assignment!  York/Poquoson Cooperative Extension is also seeking volunteers for this summer’s 4-H camp (July 31 – August 4). Call the Extension Office at 757-890-4940.

Gallery at York Hall

Shop Local Artists in Historic Yorktown

Looking for a warm spot to shop this winter? Look no further than the Gallery at York Hall, located at 301 Main Street, where you can purchase custom-made paintings, pottery, jewelry, stained glass, quilts, and other pieces from more than 300 local artists. Don't forget to present your Citizen Reward Card to receive 10% off your purchase. If you are a York County resident and don’t have a card, ask for one at the front desk. The card is free to residents. The Gallery at York Hall is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday until March 30. Beginning April 1, the Gallery extends its business hours to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.  And, by the way, the Gallery is 100% operated by volunteers!


Grant Writing Workshop February 2

The York County Arts Commission is holding a grant writing workshop at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, in York Hall (301 Main Street). Designed for area non-profit groups interested in applying for a grant, this workshop includes detailed information about the application process along with a Q&A session. Register by calling 757-890-4102 or by email.

Additional Notes for the Week…The Waste Management Center is closing at 3 p.m. tomorrow (1/21), which includes the citizen drop off center, recycling and transfer station, and compost facility.    Artist applications for the Sunday, May 7 “Art at the River” Juried Art Show are due no later than February 1.
