What's New in 2023!


New Chairman, New Sheriff

At the Board’s annual organizational meeting this week, Thomas Shepperd (District 5) was elected Chairman and Stephen Roane (District 4) was elected Vice Chairman. Also, the Board voted to continue its meeting schedule of the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in York Hall. Agendas are posted online prior to each meeting. In addition, citizens may watch the proceedings on WYCG-TV (Cox 46, Verizon 38) and live-streamed on the website.

Sheriff Ron Montgomery

Also with the new year, Ron Montgomery begins his official duties as the York-Poquoson Sheriff upon the retirement of J.D. “Danny” Diggs.  Sheriff Montgomery already has 45 years of dedicated service to the YPSO. Thank you both for your commitment to the community. 


Get Healthy at the Senior Center of York

It’s time to get moving on those New Year’s resolutions and the Senior Center has several programs to help you on your way. Start the year off right with Body Renewal held now through March.  Or, give Chair Yoga a try and reduce stress while you improve your overall health. Yoga begins Tuesday (1/10) and continues through February 6. Line Dancing is a great way to get some exercise too and is Monday (1/9) through February 13.  The January calendar is available online or stop by the Senior Center located in the Washington Square Shopping Center for more information.  Exercise programs are airing daily at 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on WYCG-TV (Cox 46, Verizon 38) and on demand anytime.

Stay Informed in the New Year

Citizens are encouraged to sign up for the wide variety of notification lists where subscribers can receive great information to their email inbox about special events, office closings, recreation programs, garbage/recycling updates, mosquito spraying, and more . . . and new this year, the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office!  View the full list and sign up here. 

Expand Your Historical Knowledge

Winter is a great time to visit a museum and admission is free!  Put the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown on your list. The special exhibit “Reign and Rebellion” gives you a view of Virginia through the lens of the Stuart monarchy, whose royal foothold impacted and influenced early America and shaped the struggles and determination of those who lived in the colony in the 17th and 18th centuries.   

Additional Notes for the Week…Reminder that free curbside Christmas tree pickup begins Monday (1/9) and continues through Friday (1/13). Residents must place their tree at the road by 7 a.m. Monday for collection during the week. Details, including drop-off at the VPPSA Compost Facility, are available online.   Artist applications for the Sunday, May 7 “Art at the River” Juried Art Show are due no later than February 1. Artwork accepted includes painting, clay, glass, leather, wood, photography and more. See the application for more information.
