Countdown to Christmas


County Offices, Libraries, and Solid Waste Collection Holiday Schedule

Offices are closed for Christmas and New Year’s holidays: Friday, December 23 and Monday, December 26; the Friday/Monday closing applies to the following weekend (12/30 and 1/02). The Libraries are closed for Christmas and New Year’s, however the Tabb Library is open Saturday, December 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Trash is not being collected on Mondays, December 26 and January 2 (pickup delayed one day both weeks), however recycling pickup is not affected by the holiday! The VPPSA facility is closing at 12 p.m. on Christmas Eve (12/24). All Waste Management Center operations are closed December 26 and January 2. Free Holiday Concert at the Tabb Library

Free Holiday Concert at Tabb Library on Sunday (12/18)

Join us for a festive holiday concert from 3 to 4:30 p.m. featuring the musical stylings of Lana Puckett and Kim Person, a gifted duo well known for their unique vocal styles, intricate guitar skills and amazing tight vocal harmonies. The duo features Lana on vocals and acoustic guitar and Kim on acoustic guitar and keyboards and sound. Light refreshments will be offered, and there will be crafts for children. Registration is not required.  

Also on Sunday (12/18)…Christmastide in Virginia Begins

Get a glimpse of 18th-century holiday traditions through interpretive programs and demonstrations during Christmastide in Virginia, held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through December 31 (closed Christmas Day) at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Historical interpreters will compare and contrast 18th-century holiday traditions with those of modern times and demonstrate a variety of holiday activities, including setting the farmhouse table for a holiday feast and open-hearth cooking of period dishes in the farm kitchen.  Remember, residents of York County, Williamsburg and James City County get in for free.  More information is available online.

Wreaths Across America Day at Yorktown National Cemetery

The public is invited to help memorialize fallen U.S. veterans at the Yorktown National Cemetery at 12 p.m. tomorrow (12/17) for Wreaths Across America Day. Fresh Christmas wreaths will be placed on grave markers at the cemetery during this remembrance ceremony conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown. This event is open to the public, with parking at the Battlefield Visitor Center. 

Proposed CIP Being Presented at Next Board of Supervisors Meeting

On the agenda for Tuesday’s (12/20) meeting is County Administrator Neil Morgan’s recommended Capital Improvements Program for FY2024 through FY2029. While the focus remains on continuing to fund projects that have been approved in current and prior CIPs, there are some new recommended items added to the list, including New Quarter Park Kayak Launch/Improvements, Batting Cages at the MAC, Fire Station Renovations, Sewer Extensions, and more. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Also, the public can watch the meeting livestreamed on the County’s website and aired on WYCG-TV (Cox 46, Verizon 38).

Art at the River

Art at the River Applications Due February 1!

Artist applications for the Sunday, May 7 “Art at the River” Juried Art Show are due no later than February 1, 2023. Artwork accepted includes original works in painting, clay, glass, fiber, basketry, leather, wood, graphics, photography, musical instruments, and mixed media. Items must be conceived and executed solely by the exhibiting artist and all work must be for sale during the show with the artist present.  Details are available in this week’s press release. 

Additional Notes for the Week…Christmas Tree recycling collections are January 9-13. Place your tree at the roadside by 7 a.m. on January 9. Please remove all decorations, tinsel, stands, etc.    Reminder:  Leaf collection continues through the end of January! Here is a schedule of zones by date.
