November 18, 2022County Receives Housing Grant, Harvest Festival Offers Fun for All, Beautification Committee Announces Calendar Winners County Receives Funding for Housing Rehabilitation
Great News!…This week, York County was announced by the Governor’s office as one of ten recipients of a Community Development Block Grant! The $1.3 million will rehabilitate 12 single-family homes, reconstruct two homes, and demolish one dilapidated home, ultimately serving 23 low- to moderate-income County residents in the Carys Chapel Road area. Staff in the County’s Division of Housing & Neighborhood Revitalization submitted the request for the grant program that is federally funded and administered by the Commonwealth.

Harvest Festival is a Cornucopia of Fun! Tomorrow’s (11/19) event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. is an autumn extravaganza for all ages to enjoy. A live animal show, petting zoo, log carving demonstration, balloon art, inflatable axe throwing, and pie eating contest are some of the great free activities planned. Vendors will be selling the traditional Thanksgiving foods that you need for your holiday table, including turkey, sweet potatoes, rolls, and pumpkin pie. Local jewelers, painters, and photographers will also be selling their holiday handiwork. Enjoy bluegrass music from Ralph Motley and the Last Minute Grass and listen to the patriotic tunes of the Fifes & Drums of York Town. The Virginia Living museum presents its live animal show inside the Freight Shed at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The full schedule of events is available on the Visit Yorktown website.

Don’t Miss these Holiday Favorites from Parks & Recreation It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And the staff of Parks & Recreation are ready to help kids and adults have a fabulous holiday season, with activities such as Gingerbread House Workshop, Snowflake Origami, Wreath Making, and Holiday Make & Take. Holiday Hoopla Camp offers kids grades K-5 a sleigh-full of fun during the school break, including games, art, and movies. Additional Notes for the Week…The County’s Leaf Collection program continues through January. In the first week, 75 tons of leaves were collected – that’s 25 tons more than the first week last year! Check the website for leaf collection information, including the pickup schedule. The Waste Management Center is closing early at 1 p.m. tomorrow (11/19) for scales maintenance. Operations at the Citizen’s Drop-off, Recycling Center, Transfer Station, and Compost Facility resume Monday (11/21).
