York County Honors Veterans, Maritime Festivities on Saturday,
Drivers Take Note


Special Events Scheduled to Honor Our Veterans

  • Veterans Day Ceremony – 12 p.m. tomorrow (11/11) in York Hall, 301 Main Street, recognizing veterans and the sacrifices they have made.
  • York County Historical Committee’s Lecture Series – 3 p.m. Sunday (11/13), a special historical lecture on the USS Constitution will be presented by Retired U.S. Navy Captain Chris Melhuish.
  • 4th Annual Veterans’ Art Show through November 20, Yorktown Arts Foundation hosts a juried art show at On the Hill Gallery showcasing an exhibit of artwork from active duty and those who served in the military. 

Reminder:  York County Offices, Courts, Social Services and the Libraries are closed tomorrow.

Yorktown Market Days Maritime Market

Maritime Festival Saturday
H2-Oh, what fun people will have at the Maritime Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday (11/12) at Riverwalk Landing. This event is full of activities for the whole family.  Enjoy some of the best seafood in the area, purchase nautical-inspired art, and shop for seasonal produce.  Pirates will invade the waterfront to talk to kids about seafaring life, and there will be educational information for all ages!  See the full list of what’s On the Docket. Also, this is the last chance to tour the Nao Trinidad that is open for FREE tours during the festival.

Yorktown Wine Festival

Tickets Still Available for Sunday’s Rescheduled Wine Festival
Your taste buds can take a trip around the world on Sunday (11/13) from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Yorktown Wine Festival!  Ticketholders will be able to sample wine, mead, and more from over a dozen wineries and distilleries, enjoy great food from local restaurants, and listen to live music from Wonderland and Brasswind. Details and ticket information may be found online.
 
Author Talk at Tabb Library, Other Programs for Adult Patrons Coming Up
Local author and combat veteran Bill Glose will be at the Tabb Library from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday (11/12) to give an author talk and book signing featuring his recently published work All the Ruined Men: Stories, from St. Martin’s Press/MacMillan Publishers. On Tuesday (11/15), enjoy a night of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  The busy week continues on Wednesday (11/16) when Duane Baldwin, Museum Education Specialist with the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, provides an interesting and informative presentation about the traditional culture of the Indigenous people of Virginia (6:30 to 7:30 p.m.).  And finally, join an Alzheimer’s Association representative on Friday (11/18) from 12 to 1 p.m. for Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Overnight Road Work On Portion of Victory Boulevard Begins Soon
Contractor crews with VDOT will be performing work that requires the closure of portions of Victory Boulevard (Route 171) between Big Bethel Road and Route 134 next week (11/14-15). Road closures will be from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will require drivers to follow detours around the area. This field work will evaluate pavement and soil conditions as part of the development of preliminary plans for future improvements. All work is dependent on weather conditions. November 16 is a backup date, if needed. 
 
Additional Notes for the Week…Youth Basketball registration for ages 7-18 has been extended until FULL! Practices and games are December through February. Register online or call Parks and Recreation at 757-890-3500.     The Waste Management Center is closing at 1 p.m. on Saturday (11/19) for repairs to the scales. This includes the Transfer Station, VPPSA Compost Facility, and Citizen Drop-Off Center.
