Leaf Collection Starting Soon, Tax Bills Available Online, Social Services Seeks Friendly Volunteers


Leaf Collection Program Begins November 7
It’s time to get raking!  York County will begin collecting leaves Monday, November 7, starting with the Southern Zone (all homes south of Dare Road).  Leaf pick in the Northern Zone (homes north of Dare Road) begins Monday, November 14.  Leaves must be placed in clear bags (no drawstring, please) and placed by the roadside on Monday of your collection week.  Program details, including the list of neighborhoods within each zone, can be found in this week’s press release.
 
York County Tax Bills Have Been Mailed
You don’t have to wait for the Post Office to deliver it - your e-bill is now available online. Be sure to sign up here for email notifications when bills are mailed and important reminders from the Treasurer’s office. There are more details on the mailing, how to track your USPS mail, and pay your bill online on the Treasurer website. Payment is due December 5, 2022.
The public is invited to a project open house at Tabb High School on Tuesday, November 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. about the Tabb Pressure Reducing Station & Offline Storage Facility,  which will be located not far from the school.

York-Poquoson Social Services Seeks Volunteers for Elderly Visitors Program
Do you enjoy games, creative arts, and great conversation? Volunteers are being recruited for the YPSS Friendly Visitors Program! Launched earlier this month, the program seeks to enhance the lives of the elderly currently supported by YPSS by offering them meaningful one-on-one time with qualified volunteers at least 18 years of age. Activities include providing companionship, light exercise and short distance walks, reading or watching TV together, and just enjoying each other’s company.  The application form, and more information, is available on the YPSS website.

Beat the Chill at Market Days!
There’s a chill in the air, but plenty of ways to warm up at this week’s farmers market. Stop by Riverwalk Landing from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. tomorrow (10/22) to purchase soups, chowders, teas, coffees, baked goods and more. Jewelers, woodworkers, photographers, and glass artists will be showcasing their unique talents. And…..get ready for next Saturday’s (10/29) Paws at the River!  Bring your kids (and fur-kids!) to the waterfront from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for free pet portraits, a Halloween pet costume parade, and trick-or-treating at local Yorktown businesses.  This special extended market will include your favorite vendors along with animal rescue organizations discussing their important work and how you can help.  We give this market four paws up!

Library Patrons 18+:  Are You Up to the Challenge?
Interested in a little Dungeons & Dragons?  Adults are invited to join others from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (10/25) for a registration-optional evening of D&D by taking part in a one-shot campaign or starting a new ongoing one!  And then, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the following night (10/26), patrons can test their pop culture and history knowledge by attending the Tabb Trivia Night: Retro program. Register as a trivia team of 2-6 individuals via the Library’s event calendar or by calling 757-890-5120. Stay up-to-date on library programming by subscribing to the newsletter. 
 
Additional Notes for the Week…Trick-or-Treat hours in York County are 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 31. Recommended ages are 12 and under. More info, including safety tips, is available in this week’s press release.    The wet-weather forecast on Sunday has prompted the rescheduling of the Chamber of Commerce’s Yorktoberfest event to Sunday, November 6.  Details are available on the event’s website.   The Skate, Rattle, & Roll program continues Fridays at the Dare Elementary School Gym. Coming up next Friday (10/28) is a special Halloween Glow Skate! Check out the details in the fall newsletter online.
