Fire Prevention Week Begins Sunday!
Most people think fire will not happen to them, but fires happen every day. An average of 355,000 home fires happen each year in the U.S. and more than 3,000 people lose their lives to fires annually. To help promote fire safety, York County is joining departments across the nation in celebrating Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15. This year, the focus is on escape planning.  Along with having enough working smoke alarms and testing them monthly, families need to have an escape plan and should practice home fire drills so everyone knows what to do in case of fire. Learn tips and safety facts at the Open House at Fire Station 1 (118 Dare Road) on Sunday (10/9) from 2 to 4 p.m. Tour the station, visit with first responders, and have some fun!  For more on staying safe from fire, visit the Fire Prevention Week webpage and other Prevention and Community Safety pages for helpful resources.

Wormley Creek Drainage Project Completion Date Extended
The Wormley Creek Drainage Project, that has required the closing of a portion of Cook Road, will need four additional weeks of work before the equipment can be moved and the road closure lifted. As the pavement was opened and crews were able to investigate the infrastructure in place, it was revealed that there were numerous unmarked utilities located beneath the street. Performing the necessary work and not impacting these utilities is requiring additional time. As a result, the Cook Road closure will be extended to the end of November. Once completed, this project will improve the drainage of stormwater from the Edgehill neighborhood.
