Fall Market Season; Senior Center Fundraiser; Upgraded Sidewalk


Special Fall Markets Begin Tomorrow
Mark your calendars with the dates and times of these special themed Yorktown Market Days beginning tomorrow (9/10) with the First Responders Market from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Stop by and chat with a first responder, check out a fire engine or patrol car, or learn more about the Public Works Vactor Truck.  The Fall Festival is October 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a hayride, face painting, hay maze, petting zoo, and more.  A favorite event each year is Paws at the River. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 29, pet parents can visit special booths focused on pet health and happiness, have their fur-kid’s picture taken, and participate in the annual Halloween Pet Costume Parade!  Kids love the Maritime Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on November 12 when pirates “invade” the waterfront and talk about seafaring life and take the lead in singing sea-shanties. Great seafood will be available to enjoy, and a special History Fair inside the Freight Shed will allow visitors to hear untold stories of Yorktown.  All this fun and over 50 vendors too!  Get all the details in this week’s press release.

First Responders Market

Skate, Rattle, & Roll Returns Tonight!
This popular Parks and Recreation youth program glides back onto the schedule. Starting tonight, (9/9) and continuing on Friday nights, with Family/Elementary School skating from 6 to 8 p.m. and the Middle School session from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.  The Dare Elementary School gym (300 Dare Road), hosts both beginners and pros. Have a great time skating under the colored lights to great tunes on almost 7,000 square feet of floor area. Cost is $5.00, which includes skates. Pre-registration is encouraged but walk-ups are also welcomed. Rollerblade rental is an additional $3.00.  Concessions are available.  Visit the Parks and Recreation website for upcoming special “skate dates” and complete details.  Private skating birthday parties are available too!  

Senior Center of York Fundraiser

Start Your Holiday Shopping at the Senior Center Fall Craft Fundraiser
Stop by the Senior Center Friday (9/16) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday (9/17) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. when the talented Center patrons sell their one-of-a-kind handmade quilts, kitchen towels, glass work, and more in the Fall Fundraiser. Buy a ticket or two and you may win a gorgeous queen-sized quilt! All proceeds go to continue the excellent programs sponsored by the Senior Center, such as special musical performances, community updates, healthy living programs, line dancing, dining club, and other fun events. Sidewalk Ramp

Bypass Road Sidewalk Project with ADA Enhancements Underway
Construction is underway in upper York County to improve pedestrian and cycling connectivity along Bypass Road from Waller Mill to Route132. The existing asphalt sidewalk is being demolished and replaced with a new wider concrete sidewalk with ADA compliant curbs. Please be alert when traveling in the area--there will be some construction traffic and minor traffic delays but full access remains for all emergency vehicles, mail delivery, trash and recycling collections. The construction window is approximately (4) months. For more information, contact Public Works at 757-890-3750.
 
Additional Notes for the Week…Rhythms on the Riverwalk continues Thursday (9/15) with Runnin’ Shine!  Showtime is 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating and consider arriving early to grab a bite at one of Yorktown’s restaurants.
