Farmers Market Week, Tax Free Weekend, and Parking Updates

Yorktown Celebrates National Farmers Market Week August 7-13
Yorktown Market Days on Saturdays, August 6 and 13, will recognize the important role that farmers play in providing food for their communities. Eight family-owned and operated farms set up at Riverwalk Landing each week and shoppers will find many items for their tables, several that are fresh from the farm! Visitors to the markets will enjoy live musical performances and kids can stop by the information booth for temporary tattoos, stickers, and coloring sheets. Tax Free Weekend is Coming Up
This year’s 3-day sales tax holiday starts Friday (8/5) and ends two days later on Sunday (8/7). It’s a great opportunity to do your back-to-school shopping and to buy supplies that you may need for hurricane and emergency preparedness. Additionally, Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products are also tax free. More information about the sales tax holiday, including a list of qualifying items, is available on the Virginia Tax website. Also on August 5, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office “Back to School Supply Drive” will be held at the WalMart on George Washington Memorial Highway (Rt. 17) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please considering buying some supplies for kids in need. All donations are given to the York County School Division. The list of needed supplies is available online.

Special Events Designed for the Business Community
The Economic Development Authority is hosting a Business After Hours networking event on Monday, August 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Freight Shed on Water Street. Come chat with other business owners and operators, and share some of your best practices. Free to York County Chamber of Commerce members; only $10 for non-members! Register online for this fun event. Also in August, we welcome back the virtual Home-based Business Lunch & Learn series. Determining Your Worth: How to Structure Your Prices is the topic for the session on Wednesday, August 10 at 12 p.m. You can register for this series here.

New Sidewalk Coming Soon
Construction is now underway on the new sidewalk planned for the east side of Rt. 17 from Battle Road to Ft. Eustis Blvd. This is an important enhancement to the Yorktown Library renovation offering more pedestrian and cycling connectivity. Barring weather delays, the construction window is approximately four months and should be completed around the same time as the Library. While no major road closures are planned, there will be some inconveniences with construction traffic and minor traffic delays; but there will be full access for all emergency vehicles, mail delivery, trash and recycling collections. Once complete, this Rt. 17 sidewalk will allow pedestrians to safely travel from Ft. Eustis Blvd. to the Yorktown Library. Upper Level of Parking Terrace Closed for Repairs
Visitors to the waterfront are asked to park their vehicles in one of the other lots located throughout town while repair work is underway on the upper level of the Riverwalk Landing parking terrace. The repairs are scheduled to be completed by August 7. The lower level of the structure is open to business and restaurant patrons. As a reminder, the Yorktown Trolley is operating its summer hours of 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and makes stops at many of the parking lots in town.

In Other Parking News….
Starting Monday (8/1), crews will be working at the McReynolds Athletic Complex (MAC) where the parking lots are scheduled for new sealcoating. Throughout August, until the work is complete, individual lots will be closed in sections and blocked by barrels and caution tape. Park visitors are asked to observe the restrictions while work is being done. The project is scheduled to be completed in August.

Additional Notes for the Week…Thursday’s (8/4) concert features Band of Oz! Showtime is 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Riverwalk Landing. Bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating and arrive early to claim your spot! The final Sounds of Summer concert is August 11 with Slapnation. The August 10 Planning Commission meeting has been cancelled. The next scheduled meeting is September 14. Visit the website for meeting materials and agendas.
