County Getting Yorktown Ready for 4th of July

Visitors to Yorktown will soon see County staff putting up barrels and fencing to mark off the battlefield parking areas, installing signs to help direct people to activities on the day of the celebration, and vehicles and equipment being staged for deployment on the big day!  Information has been shared online and via social media, and we can’t wait until July 4th.  The day begins with the York County Historical Museum’s 8K Run/Walk beginning at 8 a.m. at York High School. There is still time to register for this event…visit the race website for details. At 9 a.m., the patriotic PARADE steps off at Water Street on its march to Main Street. There are plenty of great spots along the way where you can watch the fun.  Battlefield parking opens at 4 p.m., and evening entertainment, including the Sounds of Liberty Bell Ringing Ceremony and Live Concert,  begins at 7, followed by the dazzling fireworks at 9:15 p.m.!  More details are available in this week’s press release and in Visit Yorktown’s blog, The Scoop on Celebrating Independence Day in Yorktown.

FY2023 Budget

FY2023 Adopted Budget Now Available Online
On May 3, the Board of Supervisors adopted the Fiscal Year 2023 Budget for the period of July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. The finalized budget is now available online. In this document you can see revenues, expenditures, descriptions of the County’s departments, and tax rates, all of which remained unchanged with the exception of the real estate tax rate that was reduced to 78 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The document utilizes charts and images for a more visually pleasing presentation. The budget is the culmination of months of work by the Board of Supervisors, County staff, dedicated citizen volunteers, and the input of our residents. The budget document is large, so please allow a few minutes for it to fully download.

Parking Lot Maintenance Work at the MAC Begins July 5
The McReynolds Athletic Complex (MAC) is having some routine work done in July. The facility’s parking lots will be seal-coated to help prevent damage. From July 5-10, the lots adjacent to the soccer fields will be closed, followed by all other parking areas July 18-24. During the work, these lots will be closed off with barrels and caution tape. Additional maintenance is planned in August for the road into and out of the park. We’ll let you know those dates once they are scheduled!

Drivers:  Portion of Cook Road to Close for Drainage Project
Visitors to Yorktown will need to take a slight detour beginning July 11 when a part of Cook Road is closed so that crews can install two culverts.  The work is part of the Wormley Creek Drainage Project that is being done to alleviate drainage issues in the Edgehill neighborhood.  Signs will be posted in the coming weeks alerting drivers to the upcoming change and detours will be well marked. Access will be maintained to all private entrances within this section of the roadway. More information is available on the Public Works website.
