Juneteenth Events; Cooling Assistance; Make Plans to Celebrate
Fourth of July in Yorktown


Juneteenth Celebration Scheduled for Saturday
The County is holding a Juneteenth celebration from 5 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow (6/18) at the McReynolds Athletic Complex, 412 Sports Way. This free event is open to the public and features speakers, performers, food truck vendors, and more! The celebration concludes with a special Movies in the Parks at 8:45 featuring the hit Disney Pixar movie “Soul.” Additional information about this exciting event is available online.

Juneteenth Event: Researching Ancestors of Color
The Tabb Library is welcoming genealogist Renate Yarborough Sanders for a special one-hour workshop tomorrow (6/18) at 10:30 a.m. Participants will learn how to research and extract data about people of color from various document types. This program is offered in-person and also through Zoom. More information can be found online. The library is located at 100 Long Green Blvd.

Yorktown 4th of July Event Schedule Released
Join us in Yorktown on Independence Day for a family-friendly celebration on Historic Main Street and at the waterfront. Events begin at 8 a.m. with the Yorktown Independence Day 8K Run/Walk, followed by the Patriotic Parade at 9 a.m. that begins on Water Street. Family activities begin at 1 p.m. with outdoor games and fun for kids. The battlefield parking area (Cook Road & Ballard Street) opens at 4 p.m. Evening activities include a bell ringing ceremony and a live concert, with the spectacular fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. More information is available in this week’s press release.

County Offers Personal Property Tax Relief Program
Individuals experiencing economic hardship may apply for assistance in paying their first half 2022 personal property tax bills.  Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and applicants must meet certain criteria. Eligibility criteria and the application form are available on the County’s website. As a reminder, taxes are due June 25th. The 2% late penalty is extended through the end of September with the penalty increase to 10% delayed until October 1. Additional means of tax relief are being developed by the Board of Supervisors with County staff and will be effective with the December bills.

Cooling Assistance

Applications Now Open for Cooling Assistance

York-Poquoson Social Services (YPSS) is accepting applications to help qualified residents with their cooling needs this summer. The energy assistance program allows for payment of an electric bill, A/C repairs or installation, or purchase or installation of fans. Only one member of the household needs to apply. Details for eligibility and the link to the application can be found on the YPSS website.

Regular Meeting of the Board of Supervisors Coming Up
The next Board of Supervisors meeting is Tuesday (6/21) at 6 p.m. This meeting includes presentations from Doug Smith, President and CEO of the Hampton Roads Alliance, and the quarterly report from VDOT’s Rossie Carroll. The public hearings will begin at 7 p.m. See the full agenda now available on the Board of Supervisors web page. Summer Reading

2022 Summer Reading Challenge Begins Soon
Registration begins June 28 for this year’s Library Summer Reading Challenge. The reading goal is 5,000 hours by or before the end of the challenge on August 13. Keep track of your reading through the library’s Beanstack site or the app. A Summer Reading Challenge kick-off party is being held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on June 28 at the Tabb Library. Also, the Library will be offering a sea of weekly and special programs for all ages, so be sure to take a swim through the events calendar for all the activities. This challenge is open to readers of all ages. Details are available on the Library’s website.

Free Yorktown Trolley at Your Service
With summer break underway, the waterfront is sure to be a busy place. Don’t forget the best way to get around is the Yorktown Trolley. With 11 stops throughout the town and waterfront, you’ll have no problem getting wherever you want to go. Best of all, it’s air conditioned! The parking terrace is restricted while repairs are being done and spaces are limited to restaurant and business patrons. See the map to find all the open lots and trolley stops to make your plans.

Additional Notes for the Week…Come to Riverwalk Landing on Thursday evening (6/23) for the Sounds of Summer Concert series featuring “Cat5 Band.” Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating and arrive early to grab your spot on the lawn! Garden Art Events at the Learning Garden (301 Goodwin Neck Rd.) are held once a month this summer: How Leaves Work on June 23, Why Flowers are Important on July 21, and Pollinators on August 18.
