Fire Station Groundbreakers, Swashbuckling Pirates, Young Readers

Groundbreaking Marks the Start of Fire Station 7 Construction
On Tuesday (4/19), the County held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the future Fire Station 7 on Mooretown Road. County officials, including the Board of Supervisors, County Administrator, Deputy and Assistant County Administrators, and Fire Chief, were joined by representatives from the City of Williamsburg and James City County, as well as County staff and residents.  Utilizing an existing facility, construction work includes some renovations inside the building, while outside work will begin on a new garage to house fire apparatus.  The projected completion date is winter 2023.

Pirates Weekend and Mid-Week Garden Market Coming Up
Travel back to the golden age of piracy this weekend as Riverwalk Landing is invaded by pirates!  Blacksmith and cannon demonstrations, sea shanties and a puppet show, and a town-wide treasure hunt are all scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday (4/23 & 24) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Don’t miss the Pirate School for kids and the Pirate Trial at York Hall!  The full schedule is available on the Visit Yorktown website.  Joining in the fun, Yorktown Market Days has extended hours tomorrow of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. where you’ll see maurading scalawags sauntering past as you shop.  Several food truck options will be available and Riverwalk restaurants will be open. Parking is available in several lots throughout town and the Yorktown Trolley is running its route to carry passengers to and from the waterfront. Complete details are available in this week’s press release.  Return to the historic area next Wednesday (4/27) when Historic Garden Week visits Yorktown.  Homes and gardens are open to ticket-holders, with the special mid-week Garden Market open to everyone! Marker Honoring Revolutionary War Hero Unveiled in Yorktown
On Thursday (4/21), a marker was unveiled at the waterfront recognizing the Lafayette Trail, which maps the Marquis de Lafayette’s footsteps during his farewell tour of the United States in 1824 and 1825. Trail markers are placed at many significant sites visited by the Marquis.

“Lost Attractions of Hampton Roads” is Topic of Presentation
Local author and historian Nancy Sheppard is presenting a lecture at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, in York Hall, about the parks and places that built the Tidewater area. Sponsored by the York County Historical Committee, Ms. Sheppard’s lecture is free and open to the public and takes you on a walk down memory lane to some of the beloved but lost attractions that once entertained both residents and visitors.  More information is available on the Historical Committee website.
 
Children’s and Teen’s Book Festival Coming Up May 7
The York County Public Library welcomes all to its celebration of Children’s Book Week with a festival to recognize local authors and illustrators of books for young people. The festival - Saturday, May 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Tabb Library – includes the opportunity to meet these local authors and also enjoy a variety of actrivities. Local musical duo C. Registration Open for Sports Camps
Lionsbridge is hosting two soccer camps this summer:  June 13-17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and June 27-July 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. Both camps are held at the McReynolds Athletic Complex (MAC) and are designed for youth ages 5-17.  Other soccer camps being offered this summer include Virginia Legacy, Brazilian United, and UK Intenational.  Also accepting registrations is Golf Camp, led by Kiskiack Golf Course Professionals, from July 19-21 for kids ages 8-16.  Additional camps being offered this summer include Volleyball, Baseball, Tennis, Art, Field Trip Fever, and Summer Fun. Additional Notes for the Week…Come enjoy free Earth Day activities at New Quarter Park today through Sunday (4/22-24) including a Bird Walk, Butterfly Walk & Talk, Movies in the Parks featuring WALL-E, and a Drum Circle event. More information is available on the Parks and Recreation website.     Senior Citizens are invited to visit Washington D.C. on June 1 and tour museums, monuments, and memorials. Register by May 17 for this exciting trip to our nation’s capital.   The public is invited to a VDOT public hearing on Wednesday (4/25) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Grafton Middle School about proposed plans to widen Route 17 from Wolf Trap Road to Denbigh Boulevard. Review project exhibits, meet with VDOT representatives and provide input. Project information is available on the VDOT website.
