Yorktown Crowned the Best Place to Eat, Boat, and Explore along the Chesapeake Bay

December 17, 2020

Chesapeake Bay Magazine released its “Best of the Bay” Awards with Yorktown bringing in several wins for Virginia in all three categories: Bay Living, Food & Drink, and Boating.
The magazine describes the awards as “points of pride for the people, businesses, and locales named winners.” Their purpose is to inspire visitation and future adventure in and around the bay.

Two major honors came in the coveted categories of Most Charming Chesapeake Town and Best Dockmaster.

“History is at the center of the Yorktown experience, as befits the site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War, but they’ve updated the place a bit since then, with fine dining options, shopping, and events like art shows and outdoor concerts,” reads the first accolade.

Riverwalk Landing
York County Dockmaster, Captain James Scruggs

For the second time since taking over as supervisor of Riverwalk Landing Piers, Capt. James Scruggs was awarded the distinction of Best Dockmaster. Scruggs grew up boating on the Chesapeake Bay and, under his leadership, York County aims to provide superior customer service to all vessel captains and crew members who pass through Yorktown—whether they are docking pleasure boats, cruise ships, or historical replica tall ships for the day or for a longer length of stay.

Below is the complete list of Historic Yorktown winners, including area restaurants, museums and outdoor attractions. Voting is conducted online by readers with one winner from Maryland and one from Virginia. Additional “staff picks” are chosen in select areas.
