Senior Center of York December Activities

A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in December. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. To register for these activities, sign up in person at the Senior Center or call (757) 890-3444. NOTE: The Senior Center will be closed on December 24, 25, 31, and January 1.

 

  • Craft Day – “Signs for Christmas” – Monday, December 3, at 10 a.m. Participants will place pre-cut words onto a board and embellish it with paints, greenery, and decorative pieces for the holidays. Space is limited.
  • York-Poquoson Triad presents “You Better Watch Out! Holiday Safety Tips” – Wednesday, December 5, at 1 p.m. Join staff from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and York County Fire & Life Safety for safety tips to follow this holiday season when you are preparing for the festivities.
  • Singing with Seaford Elementary Choir Thursday, December 6, at 10:30 a.m. Children from the Seaford Elementary School Choir sing wonderful holiday favorites.
  • Christmas Luncheon Friday, December 7, at 11 a.m. This event is a merry time with good friends, food, and holiday music. The cost is $4. We will be accepted canned food items that day for the York County Food Closet. Please register in advance.
  • Holiday Cards & Gift Tags Monday, December 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Make beautiful cards and tags with facilitator Nancy Beaton just in time for the season. Space is limited. Please register by Friday, December 7.
  • “Let’s Go to the Movies” Thursday, December 13, at 1 p.m. The York County Public Library and the Senior Center present the 2000 Christmas film “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” This live-action adaptation of the book by Dr. Seuss stars Jim Carrey as the reclusive green Grinch who decides to ruin Christmas for the cheerful citizens of Whoville. Popcorn and beverage will be served. Please register in advance.
  • December Birthday Bash – Friday, December 14, at 1:00 p.m. Join us for a lively country “merry-aoke” holiday time with karaoke! Chuck Ellis and friends will provide a musical selection of songs for you to sing. Individual and group performances are welcomed. You do not have to be celebrating a birthday to join in the fun. Please register by Wednesday, December 12.
  • Computer Lab General Use. Computers in the Senior Center’s Computer Lab are available for general use Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. patrons must sign in at the front desk to use the computers. The Senior Center is not offering any computer classes during the summer.
  • Weather-related closing updates. In the threat or event of inclement weather or hazardous conditions, call the Senior Center at 890-3444 to speak with a staff member or to listen to a recorded message for updates on closures or delayed openings. Remember, anytime the York County government offices are closed, the Senior Center is closed. There may be times when government offices are open, but parking lot/sidewalk conditions are too hazardous and the Senior Center remains closed. Other options for weather notification are available to you – inquire at the Senior Center’s main desk. 

Please Note: The Dining Club’s last serving day before the holidays is Wednesday, December 19. The Dining Club will resume on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

 

Mark Your Calendar… 

“A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls” begins January 22, 2019. This free, eight-week program will be held at the Senior Center on Tuesdays beginning January 22 and continuing through March 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. During the eight sessions, participants learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercise to increase strength and balance. This program is cosponsored by the Peninsula Agency on Aging. To register and for more information, call the Senior Center at (757) 890-3444 by Monday, January 14.
