[ARCHIVED] Curbside Recycling Program

This is an image of a recycling container

Beginning July 1, 2019, York County’s curbside recycling program contract will begin with our new service provider, Tidewater Fibre Corp (TFC).  You may remember TFC, as they contracted with us previously.  You may also be aware of general changes in the recycling industry over the last year or so that have made it more important than ever to “Recycle Right!”  So what changes will York subscribers see?

Continued cart size options!  Most York customers already have a 95 gallon wheeled cart that is owned by the County.  If you would like a smaller cart, TFC will allow a onetime change to either a 65 gallon or 35 gallon wheeled cart.

Many of you have a York County-owned recycling cart with a tan lid.  You will keep this cart to use with the new recycling program.  Some residents have received a recycling cart with a green lid from our previous contractor.  TFC will provide you with a new gray program cart with a tan lid.  The old carts with the green lids are the property of the previous contractor and will be removed by that company prior to the start of the new program.  If your old cart with a green lid is not removed by July 25, please contact York County Waste Management at 757-890-3780.  After July 1, only the recycling carts with the tan lids will be serviced.

What materials will be accepted?

  • Cardboard and Mixed Paper:  Flattened boxes, magazines, junk mail, catalogs, telephone books, office paper, cards, stationary, paper grocery bags, school paper, computer paper, single layer cardboard (i.e. cereal boxes, tissue boxes), newspapers and advertising inserts.
  • Metal Cans:  steel and aluminum food and beverage cans (please rinse out food residue!)
  • Glass Bottles and Jars:  All colors of glass bottles and jars.  Please remove lids, empty liquids, and rinse out food residue.  Metal lids are recyclable!
  • Plastic Bottles and Jugs:  Water and drink bottles, shampoo, soap and detergent bottles, milk jugs.  Please empty liquids and rinse out food residue.  Lids should be removed and thrown away!

Please do not bag your recyclables in plastic bags, and please do not put plastic bags into your recycling cart!  PLASTIC BAGS ARE NOT ACCEPTED IN THE CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM.  Please bring your plastic bags to the Waste Management Center at 145 Goodwin Neck Road or to any of the 2019 Riverwalk Market Days farmer’s market events. (Bags received at the Waste Management Center and Markets will be included in the ongoing Trex Bench program, turning plastic bags into benches!) Bags and other types of plastic film may also be delivered to your local grocery or department store, including Food Lion, Target, Wal-Mart, or any participating plastic bag take-back location.

Recycling collections will still occur on an every-other-week basis.  Included in this information package is a collection calendar marked with the collection schedule.  Collection weeks are noted as “red” or “blue” (see the weekly calendar here).  Collection schedule information can be found on the York County Property Information System.

If you have questions about recycling or other Waste Management programs or would like to subscribe to the County’s Curbside Solid Waste Collections program, please contact the Waste Management Division at 890-3780, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., or through our online “CUSTOMER SERVICE REQUEST” system shown near the top of the left column at www.yorkcounty.gov/pw or www.yorkcounty.gov/wastemanagement.
