Handgun Safety Classes
This course is a GENERAL handgun safety course. It is not a concealed carry course, although it does meet the safety course criteria required to apply for a concealed carry permit. A certificate of completion will be given at the end of the 2-hour course. Please understand that this is not a hand's on course. It is a lecture-only class.

The class is FREE to all York County and Poquoson residents 18 years of age or older. You will need to bring your photo ID.

C.R.A.S.E (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) Course
This course will provide strategies, guidance, and a plan for surviving an active shooter event. Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options, medical issues, and considerations for conducting drills.

R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense System) Classes
This is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. Sheriff's Office Citizen Academy
This is a 43-hour block of instruction designed to give the citizens of York County and the City of Poquoson a working knowledge of the Sheriff's Office and the criminal justice system. 12 comprehensive 3-hour classes covering various areas of the Sheriff's Office and specific law enforcement topics will be held once a week. Certified law enforcement instructors, sheriff's office supervisors, as well as guest speakers, will conduct these instructional blocks. GET ALL THE DETAILS HERE
Sheriff's Citizen Academy for Youth
The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy for Youth is a weeklong class that provides insight into the operations of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. During this one-week, seven hour per day curriculum, sheriff’s office executives, veteran sheriff deputies and supervisors, and civilians will instruct you on a variety of subjects pertaining to law enforcement.
