The purpose
of the York County Beautification Committee is to “promote a cleaner, more
attractive York County and increase awareness of environmental issues among
York County citizens.” To accomplish these goals, the Beautification
Committee conducts or supports several programs throughout each year.
Some
examples of our programs are below:
Litter Control
Litter
control prevention and education has been a primary objective of the
Beautification Committee since its inception. To this end, the YCBC supports
and promotes the state Adopt A Highway program. Sponsored by the Virginia
Department of Transportation (VDOT), Adopt A Highway involves utilizing
groups and individuals who agree to clean a 2-mile stretch of road quarterly
over a two year period and recycle the litter collected whenever possible.
A sign is prominently displayed along the highway crediting the organization
that keeps it clean and litter-free.
Clean
Business Awards
The YCBC
recognizes those businesses who make significant efforts to improve the
cleanliness and general appearance of their location, as well as those who
consistently maintain a clean, highly attractive site. One business is
selected quarterly from each of three regions in the County - upper, lower,
and middle. Business owners or managers receive a plaque at a Board of
Supervisors meeting and a Clean Business Award sign is placed in a
conspicuous place at their business for the quarter.
Tree
Giveaways and Plantings
Each year,
in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day, the YCBC gives out hundreds of
tree seedlings. The committee is also responsible for the beautiful
daffodils you see along Routes 17, 171, and 134 in the County. The
Committee purchases the bulbs, selects the sites, and then works with VDOT
to have them planted. To date, the number of daffodils planted as part of
this project has reached into the thousands
