VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE/SCHOOL
VIOLENCE
The National Crime Victimization
Survey reports that, between 1992 and 1996, males more likely than females
to be the victims of repeated violent crime in the workplace.35
Each year, between 1992 and 1996, more than 2 million U.S.
residents were victims of a violent crime while they were at work or on
duty.17
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
reports that murder is the leading cause of death for women at work, and
the third leading cause of death for men.18
The number of
workplace homicides increased for the first time in six years (from 651 in
1999 to 677 in 2000.)29
The National Center for Education
Statistics reported that in 2000, students between the ages of 12 and 18
were victims of about 1.9 million crimes of violence or theft while at
school.40
Since the 1992-93 school year, there has been at least one
multiple-victim homicide event each school year. That number increased to
five events in 1997-98.10
