CRIMES
Each year, more than 24 million persons become victims of
more than 38 million completed and attempted fraud crimes.6
In 2000, close to
3.5 million household burglaries, 937,000 motor vehicle thefts, and
14,916,000 thefts were committed in the United States.20
Households earning
less than $7,500.00 and those earning more than $75,000.00 are equally
likely to experience a property crime (1 in 4.5). These two
categories are also more likely than any other household category to
become a victim of property crime.20
In 2000, 78,280
arsons were reported to law enforcement; 345,732 persons were arrested on
charges of fraud; 18,952 individuals were arrested for embezzlement.24
Half of all persons arrested for arson are juveniles. 89%
of juvenile arsons involved males. 35% involved children ages 12 and
under.11
