DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

In 2000, 10% of violent victimizations occurred within intimate relationships.20

3% of intimate partner assaults include a child abuse victim and 13% of child abuse cases also include an intimate partner assault.27

Researchers estimate that one-fourth to one-half of men who commit acts of domestic violence also have substance abuse problems.14

Victims of family violence are overwhelmingly female--71% for family violence versus 58% for all other types of violence.3

Organizations participating in the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs reported 4,048 cases of domestic violence affecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, a 29.7% increase from 1999.28

Between 1993 and 1999, the National Crime Victimization Survey recorded an average of 13,740 male victims and 16,900 female victims of same gender intimate partner violence.20

In 15.1% of family murders, the offender used his/her feet, hands, or fists to kill his/her intended victim.3
