CHILD ABUSE/ELDER ABUSE
There were an
estimated 826,000 victims of child maltreatment in the U.S. in 1999, with
children between birth and three years old experiencing the highest rates
or abuse.26
Persons aged 12 to 19 experienced
all crimes at rates significantly higher than other age groups.20
Children with any kind of disability are more than twice
as likely as non-disabled children to be physically abused and almost
twice as likely to be sexually abused.15
Approximately 1200 children died of
abuse or neglect in 2000.26

Americans aged 65 and older experienced violent crime in 2000.20
In 2000, 574 cases of eldercide were
documented.24
Neglect of the elderly was the most frequent type of elder
maltreatment (48.7%); emotional/psychological abuse was the second
(35.5%); physical abuse was the third (25.6%); financial/material
exploitation (30.2%) was the fourth; and abandonment (3.6%) was the least
common.8
From 1986 to 1996, there was a steady increase in the
reporting of domestic elder abuse nationwide, from 117,000 reported in
1986 to 293,000 reported in 1996--a 150.4% increase.9
