HOW DO I REPORT A SEXUAL ASSAULT

[Back]

Sexual assault remains one of the most under-reported crimes committed today. Often, survivors fear stigmatization if they reveal their assault, afraid what others will say or think about them. Sometimes, they just lack an understanding of how to report and fear what will happen if they do. It is important to remember that sexual assault, in any form, is a crime. If you have been sexually assaulted, one way to report the crime is to call 911. You can also reach the police through a non-emergency number and request to meet with an officer or investigator. Many victims call rape crisis hotlines or sexual assault counseling agencies. Victims who have been injured may also go to their local emergency room and make a report there. In this case, the hospital will call the police for the victim. However you decide to report, there are several important things to remember:

1) If the sexual assault has recently occurred, you may still be in danger. Get to a safe place.

2) If the sexual assault has recently occurred, you may also still be experiencing an intense traumatic experience. Don’t be afraid to call the police, a friend, a hotline, or an ambulance.

3) Most importantly, do not wash, bathe, or douche after a sexual assault. This may destroy very important evidence.

If you call the police, the officer responding will take a statement about what happened. If the victim is at a place other than where the assault occurred, the officer may want to go there to attempt to collect evidence. S/he may escort you to a local hospital, where a physical examination will take place. If you are a victim of sexual assault in York County or Poquoson, a special nurse, trained in sexual assault issues, will be called to conduct the examination. Victims of sexual assault who are examined as a part of a criminal investigation, and who intend to assist in prosecution, will not be charged for these exams. Also, while at the hospital, any physical complaints or injuries will be attended.
