The National Victim
Center describes robbery as one of the most feared crimes in our country
because it not only involves a loss of property, but also includes the
threat, or actual use, or violence. There are many "types" of robberies:
individuals may be robbed of personal property in their home or accosted
on the street. Sometimes robberies occur on public transportation such
buses or subways. Many robberies occur at places of employment, such as
service stations, convenience stores, or banks. Some robberies involve
weapons, such as guns or knives, and others do not. All robberies share
one commonality, however: They are often much more traumatic than a
simple property crime or the crime of embezzlement because the victim
encounters the robber face-to-face and feels an immediate loss of
control. Even when victims do not suffer extensive injury or loss, they
