EMERGENCY
PROTECTIVE ORDERS
[Back]
If
there is an outstanding charge against your abuser for assaulting you,
you are eligible for an emergency protective order. An emergency
protective order may prohibit the abuser from contacting you,
entering your home or apartment, or abusing you in the future. This
order lasts 72 hours or until 5:00PM the next day the Juvenile and
Domestic Relations Court is in session, whichever is longer. An
emergency protective order may be requested by a police officer or the
victim, and is obtained through the magistrate. It is designed to be in
place long enough for the victim to petition for a
permanent protective
order through the Court Service Unit in their jurisdiction.
For more information about protective orders, contact the
Victim-Witness Assistance Program in your area. For the York-Poquoson
Victim-Witness Assistance Program, call (757) 890-3402.
