WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?
[Back]
Domestic Violence can be identified a pattern
of abusive
behaviors used by one individual to exert power or maintain
control over another person in the context of an intimate or
family relationship. Abusive behaviors may be manifest as physical
assault, sexual assault or coercion, verbal harassment or threats,
emotional abuse, or any combination of these. Some examples of domestic
violence include pushing, shoving, or hitting; not allowing a individual
to leave when he or she expresses a desire to do so; forcing an intimate
partner to have sexual relations against his or her will; threats to do
bodily harm to a family member; destruction of property; the use of a
weapon in the commission of any of these. Domestic Violence may also
involve intimidation and include acts by one partner to isolate another,
or control or dominate the other partner’s behavior and actions.
