EFFECTS OF IDENTITY FRAUD
[Back]
Identity theft
can be devastating. Some victims have likened it to rape, except
in this case one's good name is defiled instead of one's body.
Even more painful for some is the knowledge that someone they know, such
as a sibling, co-worker, or friend, is the perpetrator of the
crime. In these cases, when the perpetrator is known, victims
often feel angry and mistrustful of others. Victims whose thief is
unknown also may experience anger, but they may also feel fear and
confusion, as they have no idea how their identity was obtained or why
they were chosen for victimization. They may also feel powerless to stop
it. In either case, whether the thief is known or unknown, many do
not know how to seek help or where to turn. This is especially true in
cases where the crime may have occurred in multiple jurisdictions, or if
the victim isn't sure where the crime took place. Fortunately,
identity theft is gaining greater awareness, which is resulting in more
resources for victims. Now there are several national and state
agencies that can assist identity theft victims in investigating identity
theft. For more information, see the resource page or contact your
local Victim-Witness Assistance Program. In York County and
Poquoson, that number is (757) 890-3402.
