NEW
VOTING EQUIPMENT INTRODUCED

The Federal Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) requires that every polling
place in the country offer a voting machine system that will allow a disabled
voter to vote without assistance. York County provides one HAVA voting
machine in every precinct.
The York County Electoral Board has selected the WINvote stand-alone "ballot
station" produced by Advanced Voting Solutions, Inc. The WINvote, used in
33 Virginia localities, has been approved by the State Board of Elections and
the U.S. Department of Justice. The nationally and state certified machine
is designed to allow a sight-impaired voter to vote by using an audio ballot
with the use of a headset. If voters would like a demonstration of the new
machine, they may call the Registrar's Office at 890-3440 to schedule an
appointment for a demonstration.
Although the WINvote will be available to enable the disabled voter to vote
independently, anyone is welcome to use this touch-screen machine.
However, the AccuVote optical scan voting equipment used since 1997 in York
County will continue to be the primary voting machine in use in all precincts.
