Who
can register to vote in Virginia?
- If
you are a US citizen, your home is in Virginia, and you
are age 18 or older, you can register to vote in Virginia.
If you will be 18 by the next General Election, you can
register when you are 17. You first must have your voting
rights restored if you have been convicted of a felony or
if you have been judged mentally incapacitated by a
circuit court.

can I register?
- Anytime
of the year. To vote in a general or primary election you
must register at least 29 days before the election, if not
already registered at your current address.

- Where
can I register?
- In
any voter registrar's office in Virginia or at special
registration sites open at night and on weekends. Voter
registration may also take place at offices of the
Department of Motor Vehicles and certain other state
agencies. In York County, citizens may apply for
registration
at the office of the General Registrar, 224
Ballard Street, Yorktown; Griffin Yeates Center, 1490
Government Rd., Williamsburg; and York County Public
Libraries, 100 Long Green Blvd., Tabb and 8500 George
Washington Memorial Hwy., Yorktown.

- Can
I register by mail?
Yes,
applications are available at numerous county offices and
businesses. Citizens who register by
mail and are first time voters in Virginia may be
required to vote in person on election day or in person
absentee and show identification.
I am in the military or reside overseas, how can I register
and vote?
Active
duty military and their dependents, as well as citizens
residing overseas, may apply for voter registration
and/or absentee ballots by
using a Federal Post Card Application
(FPCA). The
FPCA allows for all ballots that the voter is eligible
to receive to be mailed to the voter through two federal
elections.

- Voter
registration is free.

information do I need to register?
- You
must give under oath:
- Full
legal name
- Complete
address
- Date
of birth
- Social
security number, if you have one
- Complete
address of previous voter registration
- Whether
you have ever been convicted of a felony
- Whether
you have ever been judged by a Circuit Court to be
mentally incapacitated
- Date
of certificate removing either of the above two
disabilities.
- Do I
have to state my political party preference?
- No,
Virginia does not have registration by party.

can I register if I cannot leave home because I am
physically disabled or have a continuing illness?
- Call
or write your voter registrar. The registrar will
send you an application to complete and return by mail.

- Do I
have to register for each election?
- No,
if you do not move.

- What
should I do if I move to another Virginia city or county
after I register?
- Call
or write any voter registrar. The registrar will send you
a form to complete and mail in. Or stop by any
registration site and complete a new application for voter
registration.

should I do if I have changed my name or my local address
since the last election?
- Send
your voter registrar a signed statement indicating
changes. Or stop by any registration site and complete a
new application for voter registration.

I transfer my registration from another state?
- No,
you must re-register in Virginia.
