QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

How do I apply?

On the home page go to the Officer of Election form, complete it and submit.  Your request will be sent to the Registrar's office.  If you have questions you may contact the Electoral Board at 890-3599 or call the Voter Registrar's office at 890-3440.

How do I know if I am eligible?

You must be a registered voter in Virginia; you must be able to follow instructions and pay attention to detail; enjoy public service and be able to work the entire day of the Election.

How often will I work?

The Electoral Board appoints the Officers of Election during the first week in February of each year.  They will notify you of your appointment and which election you will be needed.  You may be working in the following elections: November General Election, June Primary or Special Elections.

What will I do?

Report to your precinct at 5:00 a.m. on Election Day; prepare the precinct for voting; set up the voting equipment; process voters; tally results at the end of the day; secure all voting machines and close the polls. Chiefs or Assistant Chiefs return results and equipment to the Voter Registrar's office Election night.

What do Central Absentee Precinct Officers do?

They process mailed-in absentee ballots; check names on absentee voter list; record their name in the poll book and tabulate votes using voting equipment.

Is there training?

Yes, the Electoral Board and General Registrar conduct a required training class for each election official prior to the November General Election.  Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs are required to attend a training class prior to each election.

Where will I work?

The Electoral Board will notify you in which precinct you will be working. If possible, Election officials are assigned to their home precinct. However, you may be assigned to a different precinct if the need occurs.  You may also be asked to work in the Central Absentee Precinct (CAP).
