OFFICERS OF ELECTION INFORMATION
OFFICERS OF ELECTION
are appointed
by the Electoral Board during the first week in February of each year for a term of one year from March 1st of the year appointed through February 28th or 29th
of the following year. Additional Officers may be appointed throughout the year as needed. Officers of Election are required to be competent
persons, fully capable of performing all required duties in a mature, pleasant and
calm manner, of good moral character, and a qualified voter of
Virginia. He/she must NOT hold any elective office or be the deputy or employee of an elected official.
Officers
of Election are required by State law to state which political party, Democratic or Republican, they prefer to represent. The Electoral Board will appoint
an equal number of representatives from each party or if an odd number of officials, the majority will be from the party of the Governor. Appointed
officials must take an oath of office prescribed in Article II, Section 7 of the Constitution of Virginia. He/she must take seriously the oath to serve
and be available in all but emergency situations.
Officers of Election
will be required to attend a training session before each General
Election. $20 is paid for attending the training session and $100 is paid for Election Day making a total
of $120. Officers of Election obviously do not serve for the money but are truly committed
citizens to the election process. The hours on Election Day are 5:00 a.m. until
the vote is tallied after the polls close at 7:00 p.m. Each precinct has a Chief Official and an Assistant. The Chief Official receives additional
compensation of $35. He/she also receives mileage for his/her work the day before Election Day in picking up materials and on Election Day for returning
the results to the Registrar's Office. Assistant Chief Officials receive $20 additional compensation.
