Proper Pruning of Hydrangeas

Making the Cut

• Pruning cuts are made ¼" above the bud at a 45˚ angle in order to shed water. The cut should shed water away from the remaining bud.
• The decision was made to cut this stem at 24" above the ground. The result will be  bud break that will be lower in the plant. This cut will reinvigorate the plant.
The resulting stem will have blooms on it next year.
• This reduces the size of the plant and stiffens the stem, resulting in erect held blooms.
