Proper Crape Myrtle Pruning

Making Pruning Decisions

Crape Myrtles are pruned using the same principles as pruning trees.
 Follow the
è to help you make your decisions when pruning.

Basic pruning principles are:  Prune out dead wood, remove diseased wood, remove damaged wood including co-dominant leaders, inward growing branches, rubbing or crossing branches, and bad crotch angles.

Characteristics Before

Canopy clutter,
rubbing branches, and
inward growing branches

Characteristics After

Improved light and
air penetration

The Crape Myrtle is a tree with many different mature heights, (depending on its cultivar).  Prune for tree form and allow plant to attain its natural beauty.

The purpose of pruning the Crape Myrtle is to:

  • Train the plant during its early years to have sound structural growth.
  • Open the canopy of the plant to allow light and air penetration, thus reducing disease and insect pests and resulting in fewer pesticides sprayed.
  • Enhance the natural beauty of the tree.
