Court Services
The York-Poquoson Court Team provides
assessments for child custody and/or visitation by court order only.
Additionally, mediation services are provided for child custody and/or
visitation disputes.
What is Mediation?
- A voluntary program.
- Uses a trained, neutral third party to help settle disputes.
- Allows an opportunity to be heard and understood and to hear and
understand the other party.
- No one is judged right or wrong.
- Uses creative problem solving and improves communication.
- The goal is to achieve a satisfactory result for both parties.
- Parties decide the outcome resulting in a "win-win" solution for
both.
Mediation is not:
- Marriage or family counseling.
- A hearing to review testimony.
- Adversarial in nature.

- Reduces emotional stress.
- Saves time and expense.
- Voluntary
- Improves relationships.
- Allows parties to maintain control over what happens.
Who Uses Mediation
Parties can be referred to mediation by the court or parties may request
mediation services on their own, without a court referral.
